Review by Rafael Lobaton

Next Exit, the 1983 album by Split Enz, is a kaleidoscopic display of the band's eclectic sound and songwriting prowess. The album, produced by Hugh Padgham, showcases Split Enz's knack for crafting catchy pop songs with quirky lyrics and offbeat arrangements.

The album opens with "Shark Attack," a propulsive rocker that sets the tone for the rest of the record. The band's trademark harmonies and intricate guitar work are on full display on "One Step Ahead," a haunting ballad that is one of the album's standout tracks.

Other highlights include "Message to My Girl," a tender love song with a soaring chorus, and "I Walk Away," a moody, atmospheric track that builds to a cathartic climax. The album's title track, "Next Exit," is a playful, synth-driven romp that showcases the band's sense of humor and experimental tendencies.

It is beautiful!  I heard about it when reading "Stranger Then Fiction" by Mike Chunn.

@JimEAPG: I always took this song to be one on the subject of suicide. The lyrics are especially poignant if you consider that one.  Tim's eventual departure from the band may have been in the background as well, but that wasn't immediately present between Time and Tide and Conflicting Emotions; it really surfaced during the making of Conflicting Emotions following the success of Tim's first solo album and the attendant stress his solo fame caused the band.

Definitely must be from the Conflicting Emotions recording sessions. The engineering of the drum dynamics on that were very different from the Time and Tide sound, and this fits CE perfectly.

Probably replace Bon Voyage with this, since that song is pretty slow, and Next Exit as the last song on the album would still fit in with the "Tim going out" theme.

As for Kia Kaha, replace any one of the songs in the Neil "Shitrilogy" for it.

Spellbound (compilation album) was supposed a North American release--that was meant for the U.K. release. Actually, there were TWO Spellbound records (one for Australia & New Zealand, and one for the British).

I've always been really antsy about this and Kia Kaha (Message to My Girl b-side) being on See Ya 'Round, considering both songs contain Tim in an otherwise pointedly Tim-less album.

Just imagine if they took two of the crappier songs off Conflicting Emotions, and replaced them with Kia Kaha and Next Exit that album would be twice as good (or, uhh... only half as bad) as it already is.
