Review by Maria Jose Ribas Albendea

Transcendental Youth, the latest album from the Mountain Goats, is a haunting and emotional journey through the ups and downs of life. With his signature raw and emotive vocals, lead singer John Darnielle takes listeners on a journey through his personal struggles with mental illness and addiction, as well as the broader themes of love, loss, and redemption.

Musically, the album is a departure from the band's earlier work, with a more polished and refined sound that incorporates elements of folk, rock, and even jazz. The addition of horns and strings adds depth and texture to the songs, while Darnielle's lyrics remain as sharp and introspective as ever.

Standout tracks include the haunting opener "Amy AKA Spent Gladiator 1," the anthemic "Cry for Judas," and the poignant "White Cedar," which features some of Darnielle's most vulnerable and confessional lyrics to date.

About The Mountain Goats

The Mountain Goats are an American indie folk band formed in Claremont, California by singer-songwriter John Darnielle. For many years, the sole member of the Mountain Goats was Darnielle, despite the plural moniker. Although he remains the core member of the band, he has worked with a variety of collaborators over time. Throughout the 1990s, the Mountain Goats were known for producing low-fidelity home recordings (most notably, on a cassette deck boombox) and releasing recordings in cassette or vinyl 7 formats. Since 2002, the Mountain Goats have recorded studio albums with a full band. The band is currently based in Durham, North Carolina. Line-ups: 1991-1996: John Darnielle and Rachel Ware. 2002-2007: John Darnielle and Peter Hughes. 2007-2015: John Darnielle, Peter Hughes, Jon Wurster. 2015-present: John Darnielle, Peter Hughes, Jon Wuster, Matt Douglas. Occasional members 1991-1995: Sarah Arslanian, Amy Piatt, and Rosanne Lindley. Occasional members 1995-present: Franklin Bruno, Erik Friedlander, John Vanderslice.

I identify with this song to the point that the only thing that allows me to lessen the pit of sorrow in my chest is putting it on and singing along

How does this not even have 800 likes? Less than 1M views? Good god, it's a musical GEM

I think the most important lesson in The Bible is one I was never taught in church. Judas betrayed his friend, his mentor, his beliefs, and his lord for a few measly pieces of silver. Judas is not the villain of The Bible, nor the romans, or even devils. The root of the evil, the true villain... Were those few pieces of silver.

There's something about this song. When you're mentally ill, you do things that you don't really understand. Connecting that to Judas hits me in a way that's hard to put to words. Maybe he didn't know what he was doing, maybe he was just being shoved by forces he couldn't understand. He had to do what he did, but he never really understood why.
"Sad and angry, can't learn how to behave. Still won't know how in the darkness of the grave."
This pretty much sums up what it feels like to be an American under 40 these days

I like the idea of people being broken machines: a machine doesn't act with malice or intent, it just acts.

Some things you do just to see how bad they'll make you feel
Sometimes you try to freeze time 'til the slots are a blur of spinning wheels
But I am just a broken machine

And I do things that I don't really mean

Long black night
Morning frost
I'm still here

But all is lost

Speed up to the precipice and then slam on the brakes
Some people crash two or three times and then learn from their mistakes
We are the ones who don't slow down at all

And there's nobody there to catch us when we fall

Long black night
Morning frost
I'm still here

But all is lost

Feel the storm every night
Hope it passes by
Hallucinate a shady grove where Judas went to die
Unfurl the black velvet altar cloth
Draw a white chalk Baphomet
Mistreat your Altar Boys long enough and this is what you get
Sad and angry... can't learn how to behave

Still won't know how in the darkness of the grave

Long black night
Morning frost
I'm still here
But all is lost

John Darnielle is the only man who can consistently use brass in rock music and make it sound ducking amazing.
