Review by Runa Inawan

Joe Jones' album "You Talk Too Much California Sun" is a compelling and energetic tribute to the sun-kissed state. With its upbeat rhythms and catchy melodies, this album is a perfect soundtrack for any road trip or beach party.

The album's title track, "You Talk Too Much," is a standout, with its infectious chorus and playful lyrics. Other tracks like "California Sun" and "Surf's Up" capture the carefree spirit of the West Coast, while "I'm a Happy Man" and "Loveable Lady" showcase Jones' soulful vocals and songwriting skills.

About Joe Jones

New Orleans born R&B artist best known for the 1960 hit, "You Talk Too Much". Born August 12, 1926, Jones went on to discover and manage the Dixie Cups before moving to Los Angeles in 1973 where he founded his own music publishing firm and became an advocate for black R&B artists, helping them recover their rights to their songs since many hadn't known much about recording contracts and unwisely signed away their royalties. Jones died on November 27, 2005 at the age of 79 in Los Angeles, following quadruple bypass surgery.

Apparently, there are two versions of this song - one under the Roulette label and another after that contract ended under the small new Orleans label RIC which has fewer instruments.

For those wondering, the musicians are lead vocalist Joe Jones, guitarist Roy Montrell, bassist Acy Fairman, drummer Leo Morris, pianist Reginald Hall, tenor saxophonist Harold Battiste, and trumpeter Teddy Riley.

Originally recorded by Frankie Ford with Huey Smith, but not released [in time]; an irritant for Frankie for the rest of his career.
Then... almost the same thing happened to Joe Jones with arguably the first surfer song the next year [as reported above by the Prof]. Jones did achieve first release, but, for some reason, his version didn't catch on.

Another classic oldie but goodie for me, since I was 5 in 1960, I didn't really get hooked on these song until about 10 years later. Good to hear this.

Does this song describe anyone you know? Maybe you worked in an office with lots of gossip or idle rumors? Never had any in laws but they often fit the bill.
No wonder this song shot up the charts and peaked at #3.
